What I Wear: Internship Edition

Hey guys!

A couple of weeks ago, a co-worker gave me what most people would consider a compliment. “You look so cute and preppy today” she said. For me, however, looking ‘preppy’ has always had negative connotations — it was actually an insult at my high school. Can’t say I blame my peers, the tendency of preps to wear excessive pink and Lily Pulitzer has turned me off of ‘preppy style.’

However, the place I work at is a preppy brand. I was dressing for the environment I was in. I can honestly say that the place I work (an equestrian brand) makes beautiful clothes that I wear to the barn pretty much exclusively (no pink or tacky prints. Just high quality stuff — the good, authentic Ralph Lauren style prep that has been lost on many preppy bloggers). Still, my co-worker’s comment made me realize something — I had no clue on dressing authentically at work.

When I say “authentically” , it means ‘true to my style.’ In an effort to be professional, I wore too many pleated skirts, polos and button downs. At one low point, I even wore ballet flats. Yes, really.

I felt as if my monicker had died, and it made me sad. But it also made me wonder. Can “Princess in Trainers” still be “Princess in Trainers” at the office without looking unprofessional? Turns out, I can.

Since my office is pretty creative, the dress code is a bit more flexible than most. Using a layering technique that I was obsessed with last summer, I Layered my vest over a thin sweater. Paired with a unique necklace, Skagen watch (IT IS THE BEST THING EVER) and Vince slip-ons, I actually felt like myself. Success.

On the whole, my job has been an amazing experience. Just being around so many talented people has made me realize that I am on the right path. I’m going to write a full post on my internship once its over, and I can’t wait to share that too.

Side note: I am doing lots of tech-y stuff as of late. Can’t wait for you guys to see the new site. Its gonna be up & ready (*fingers crossed*) by the beginning of September. See you next week!

White on White

Hello there…

As I write this post, I’m mourning the loss of a white teeshirt to an apricot / pickle juice stain. Its in the wash. Hopefully it recovers.

How is this relevant — you ask?

Lately, I’ve been obsessed with wearing all white everything. There’s something very unattainable about white clothing. When I bought these Acne trainers last March, the fact that they were designer made them unattainable enough. Add in white leather and I was basically in heaven. Problem? Turns out, wearing shoes makes them dirty overtime. Being a young adult who’s pretty lazy with garment maintenance (I wear hoodies 99% of the time), my mom gave me a talking to. Turns out, Mr. Clean Magic Eraser makes white shoes look like new. Just remember to wash the laces separately. Still haven’t done that yet….

On a different note, this Asmar bamboo tee has been an essential during this heat wave. Keeps the sun burns at bay — plus its crazy soft and just thick enough to not be see through.

Let me know what your favourite white pieces are in the comments! See you next week <3.

Clothes That Don’t Fit

Hello…. people of the internet?

I know, I know. I missed last week. Even though the readership of this blog is considerably small, I still feel annoyed with myself if I don’t post every single Tuesday (I’ve only missed twice). However, not only was last week insane, but I also had no clue what to wear. Since I’m at home, my closet is mostly full of all my “rejects” that I didn’t take to the UK (meaning pieces that I think are hideous or too small).

Instead of completely writing off these items, I decided that this week, I’d give one reject a new life. The dress. Although it may look like a slightly oversized blouse, its actually a dress that’s far too short. Funny enough, I always discover that a dress is too short at the most inopportune times. Parties, windy days, dinners at grandma’s. The list goes on.

Thankfully, this Urban Outfitters dress is no ordinary dress. Button front anything means that it can be worn like a cardigan or an unbuttoned shirt. I paired it with these loose fit trousers to keep everything chilled, and the crop-top makes the layering look effortless and not awkward (like this sentence). Cropped things are convenient because they decrease fabric weight & allow you to wear more all at once.

As for the trainers, I’m still rocking the Vince slip-ons. They only leave my feet when I go to bed. Or take a shower. No lie.

P.S: I LOVE PARKING GARAGES AS YOU CAN TELL .

Be sure to let me know how you repurpose your “rejects”. See you next week! ❤

Perforated.

Hey guys…

I went out for drinks the other day (not alone — don’t fret), and as I chatted about my interests, I came to a realization. Call it maturing, but I’ve ended up with completely different friends, fashion tastes and career aspirations. After going to Sweden last March, its as if I’ve opened my mind. Life is beautiful — eh?

Rather than disliking certain things for all of eternity, I’ve made the conscious choice to give them a chance. I’m switching to dressage. I’ve now taken a liking to Swedish style, Jaden Smith, Avocados and yoga. Maybe I’m becoming basic **cringes at the word choice**, but I like to think its a newfound optimism. What’s wrong with trendy stuff if you genuinely like it? What’s wrong with someone else [@lovelaurenelizabeth] proving that a certain trend or style is worth a try? In particular, Lauren Elizabeth’s obsession with perforated Vans & Vince slip-ons caused me to splurge on these Vince ones. It’s her fault.

On that fateful deep chat & whiskey day, I even rocked perforated shorts, shoes and a shirt. Up until recently, I used to think that perforated clothing made the wearer look like a walking car seat. Maybe that’s true, but when its black & white, its like a nice car seat. An Audi car seat — and what’s wrong with that?

*On a completely random note, I visited the Kit & Ace store in Vancouver that same day! I loved the second white top so much that I ended up wearing it for the rest of my photos. It was #truelove.

I hope you guys have enjoyed this week’s post! Stay tuned: some big graphic changes are in the works.. 🙂

Let’s go to the beach.

Hey there…

After a busy week of your standard 9-5, a trip to the beach was long overdue. Contrary to stereotypes, there are actually beaches in Canada. They get hot. We go swimming. It’s a thing. For these sorts of occasions (it was 30 celsius), lightweight shorts, my Adidas and my dog Buddha = the only things I need for some fun downtime — which usually involves music, reading, and immersing myself in all that is not degree-related.

While I was at the beach, I brought some of the “impulse buy” books I bought last semester (books I bought fully knowing I had no time to read them). First up? The Bell Jar. Not the most uplifting beach read, but I can’t put it down.

After spending a few hours at the beach with the family, we had a campfire and listened to the new Kendrick Lamar album (ITS PURE GOLD GUYS). Not to brag, but I can roast a mean marshmallow — golden always.

I always try to appreciate these calm moments in my life…. sometimes I wish I could just become a yogi and move to Vermont. Anyone wanna join?

I hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s post! Be sure to tell me below what you’re reading / listening to? I’d love to know <3.

Hello friends!

Did the title get your attention?

As of late, I’ve been matching my clothes unintentionally. Whether its an all purple outfit to the gym, or this green look, it’s what I like to call a  “subconscious” way of dressing.

Right after this photo shoot, the sky started hailing. Thankfully, I managed to avoid it. However, this hybrid weather has caused me to wear shorter dresses with massive jumpers.

Despite the hail, I’m optimistic at the moment. All of my essays are done! In two weeks, I’ll be back home in Canada. Words cannot summarize how much I love Canada, and I can’t wait to attend the festivals this summer & intern at one of my favourite companies.

Thanks for reading! I hope you guys have enjoyed this week, and are inspired to try something new. Comment below: how do you deal with hybrid weather? Any lazy styling tricks?

Hello friends!

As I write this post, it’s 10:30pm and I’m at the library. This is not ideal, since I’m not one to work past 8pm (I’m an old woman with cats inside). Why am I up so late, you ask? Honestly, this week has been monumentally insane. Deadlines, reading — attempting to exercise.

Despite the chaos, however, I’m somehow managing to make room for downtime. These shots were taken after I attended a student event called “Re:fashion” at my university. Essentially, students give Re:fashion their clothes. Not only do students receive 70% of the profit, but the remainder goes to charity. Pretty awesome. From the event, I ended up purchasing a fringed Marlene Berger jumper, which I cannot wait to rock at Pemberton Music Festival this summer.

Alongside fringed jumpers, I am also obsessed with these trousers. I bought them during winter, in which they were far too light to wear. Now that the weather is becoming tolerable, however, I have found their versatility helpful: chic enough to go with anything, yet comfortable enough to run around in. I’ve worn them to Nobu and to lectures — they’ve been getting miles. Paired with my pony hair Superga, they get dressed down without losing their style.

I hope you guys have enjoyed this week’s post! In the comments, tell me about your favourite consigned clothing items / vintage shops. I travel a lot, and would love to know where YOU go (just might feature it in a future post)!

Sweden Pt. 1

Hello friends!

Thanks for the patience — I haven’t been on my “A Game” thanks to a sand dune induced case of whiplash (think concussion symptoms without the concussion. And feeling like you sprained your ankle, but in your neck). If anything, this experience has made me grateful for my health, youth, and all the work my body does 24/7 that I don’t even think about.

Now that I feel much better, I packed my bags and flew to Sweden. First stop? the MoMa of course. I’m currently taking modern art in art history, and my aim is to appreciate it more. Based on my fascination with the gigantic spider, I think my visit worked. (The museum is wonderful!!!!).

For this outfit, I decided that I was going to freeze for fun. Its my Canadian blood. I layered a teeshirt over my DVF dress and I am completely obsessed. As if this dress wasn’t amazing & versatile enough on its own. With the pop of red, I feel like a lady (thanks MAC Lady Danger for matching my Nikes).

I hope you guys enjoyed this post! Comment below if you’ve ever been to Sweden, or have MoMa recommendations. I’m on the hunt for more :).

Spring Break: Dubai Burj Khalifa

Hello friends!

I’ve been having a wonderful time in Dubai for the last few days. It’s my first time, and it has been…. interesting. Although I’m not exactly one to cover up in hot weather, I managed thanks to some strategic H&M. I think there’s something really cool about the contrast of light, airy layers against chunky boy shoes.

Besides the fashion, The food is also STELLAR! Back in the UK, I get made fun of profusely for eating dates all the time. Over here, there are boutiques that sell dates — and they’re delicious. I also went to a buffet today which featured only foods from the Middle East. I was in heaven.

After the massive buffet lunch, we headed to the Burj Khalifa, where these pictures were taken. I love the futuristic architecture in Dubai, the Burj Khalifa being a prime example. They also gave us more dates at the top. I can’t complain.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this post, and comment below if you’ve ever been to Dubai (or love dates as much as I do)!

Casual in Kirkcaldy

Hello friends!

After coming home around 11pm, my flatmate rightfully asked me:

“Stephanie …. where have you been?”

“Kirkcaldy” I replied.

“But no one goes to Kirkcaldy” she said, baffled.

And now I know why.

In a state of silliness, I accidentally got on the wrong bus. Instead of the 45 minutes to Edinburgh like I had planned, I ended up on a 2 hour bus ride around Kirkcaldy. After finishing the play I was reading (Waiting for Godot), I knew that I needed to get off the bus. The light was dying , and I was dying of car sickness.

Turns out, there aren’t too many fashion bloggers in Kirkcaldy (NO WAY LOL). Because of this, I met some really funny people — a lady asked me if I was taking nature shots! 😛

For this unexpected trip, my Vans were a life-saver. The cracked fabric makes any sort of rain or dirt look intentional, (Unlike white Converse, which ultimately end up looking disgusting in one week).

Side note: Although I’m rather late on the bandwagon, I’ve become obsessed with GIFs. What do you guys think? Do any of you know how to make better quality ones than imgflip?

Comment Below on a time where you got lost — and how you made the best of it ❤

See you Friday! (I will remember this week — promise)!
