Dophins and Doughnuts: Thoughts on “chavvy clothing”

Hey guys..

In life, there are some moments I completely forget (likely your name upon meeting — sorry), and some I remember in vivid detail. Naturally, one of these “photographic memory” moments related to fashion. I was in first year university, sitting on a friend’s floor as she prepared for a night out. The party theme? “Chavvy clothes.”

Regardless, I thought my friend had nailed it. She was wearing big falsies, orange tanner and a short neon outfit. I love tanner, neon and falsies as most girls do — just in moderation. Halfway through my friend getting ready, another girl who was going to the party (I had to study that night) walked into the room. “I need chavvy 14-year-old boy clothes” she announced, sitting on my friend’s bed. “Like, I need a Hypebeast hoodie or Adidas trackkies.” As she continued to describe what constituted a “chav” in her eyes, I began to realize that this 20 year old Canadian girl (me) was dressing like not just a “chav,” but a “chavvy 14-year-old boy.” Great.

My only regret from that moment was not defending my Adidas trackkies and tendency to buy slightly obnoxious trainers and hoodies. I like to think that I look more like Ruby Rose (I wish), rather than a pre-pubescent boy from Dundee who just discovered JD Sports (for the record I love Dundee and I think everyone has rad style. Open your minds people). Considering my recent foray into the men’s section of JD sports (they have good teeshirts OK?), this impression might be fairly accurate.

In my opinion, said “chavvy” clothes aren’t actually that bad. The key? I like to wear pieces that are recognizably from street wear brands, without actually saying the name in giant letters. If I’m wearing a hoodie or trackkies that have the name in giant letters, I at least make the other items less obvious yet still noticeable (i.e: the dolphin is distinctively Odd Future, and the stripes are distinctively Adidas). These trainers pair well with my outfit because they have flash yet aren’t boring or overly obvious.

Also, maybe we should all stop coming up with slang to insult people who are different from us? If I have learned anything about style / life, its that you need to try new things and not judge. There’s a crazy idea.

See you next week! Turns out posting with all my tech-y stuff in the background will work this week. What a relief :).

Hello there…

As I write this post, I’m mourning the loss of a white teeshirt to an apricot / pickle juice stain. Its in the wash. Hopefully it recovers.

How is this relevant — you ask?

Lately, I’ve been obsessed with wearing all white everything. There’s something very unattainable about white clothing. When I bought these Acne trainers last March, the fact that they were designer made them unattainable enough. Add in white leather and I was basically in heaven. Problem? Turns out, wearing shoes makes them dirty overtime. Being a young adult who’s pretty lazy with garment maintenance (I wear hoodies 99% of the time), my mom gave me a talking to. Turns out, Mr. Clean Magic Eraser makes white shoes look like new. Just remember to wash the laces separately. Still haven’t done that yet….

On a different note, this Asmar bamboo tee has been an essential during this heat wave. Keeps the sun burns at bay — plus its crazy soft and just thick enough to not be see through.

Let me know what your favourite white pieces are in the comments! See you next week <3.

Hello friends!

Last weekend I took a little trip to Vancouver Island. I haven’t seen my best friend since February, and it’s sad that even in Canada, we’re so far apart. On our to-do list? China town, B.C. Parliament buildings, Market Square Flea Market, Green Cuisine ( AMAZING VEGAN BUFFET with food that will convert you) , Baggins Shoes (too many Vans & Converse — in the best way) and an awkward encounter with a flower truck driver. Turns out, he didn’t want to join our photos.  Thankfully, I managed to snap a beautiful pic before he sped off.

The next day, we also attended Victoria Pride. For the event, sidewalks around town were permanently painted rainbow. Awesome.

When these photos were taken, it was also 33 Celsius. Essentially, this makes putting together blog looks far more difficult than usual (I say that a lot — but I prefer cold-ish weather). Since I only brought a backpack to Victoria, I also had to bring lightweight pieces that could translate from day – to – night. Pre layered skirts and dresses are my go-to.

Of course, the Vince slip ons made another appearance. No surprise there.

See you next week! Let me know if you’ve ever been to Vancouver Island — if you haven’t, you’re missing out <3. Also: Whipped Cream is bomb and she’s from Vancouver Island. Reason enough to go :).

Hello friends!

Honestly, summer has been my saviour. At the end of last semester, my brain was far too foggy to function. Even last week, when I wrote the forest post, I was still too jet-lagged to function. Now that I’m physically and mentally present, my mom and I went into Vancouver for my birthday dinner at my favourite Italian restaurant.

Even though it was a grey day, Vancouver always has cool things to take photos of. Besides, summer fashion isn’t really my thing anyways (layering = my thing). For inbetween weather, I’m obsessed with my lightweight tie-dye cardigan. The waterfall cut looks awesome layered under my jacket, but isn’t overly warm like a hoodie.

It was nice to have a day off work and chill with my mom, but all next week = working in the office. Wonder what I’ll wear….

I hope you’ve enjoyed my post this week! Comment below if you know of any new restaurants I can try :).

I’m Home

Hello friends,

I’m finally home! Since I’m back in Canada, I decided to detach myself from my computer and *gasp* go outside. I unearthed my Diamond board and cruised down manicured paths near a friend’s place. While skating around, I took some shots.

It’s really nice to be back on the west coast. Everyone is so laid back, and I feel a lot more free and casual. However, my penchant for layering was challenged by the Canadian heat. Turns out pleather pants aren’t breathable. At all.

As for the rest of my outfit, I’m particularly in love with the flowered shoe bag that I used as a purse. I tied a cube necklace to it, and I love how it turned out. Purses are a pain to skate around with.

Although I won’t have time to skate too much next week, lots of exciting stuff will be happening! I’ll be starting my summer job, and getting back to boxing and riding.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this week’s post! Be sure to let me know where you’re from in the comments <3.

Hello friends!

Today I found inspiration from a person I saw. Call me a copycat. It’s cool. I was on  the tube a week ago, and I saw a girl wearing a sheer, long sleeved shirt over jeans and under a leather jacket. She wore a chain overtop. She was crazy cool.

Once the envy subsided, I decided to copy her. I already owned most of what she was wearing, I had simply never thought of putting these items together. Safe to say I’m obsessed.

Since its revision period, I don’t have any life changing updates. I’ve been in the library till far too late, blasting Jaden Smith and drinking copious amounts of tea from my Tate Modern mug. Sometimes, when things are not so fun, we all need coping measures.

Comment below if you’ve ever copied someone’s outfit! Also, feel free to tell me you’re revision coping strategies — I need all the help I can get.

Hello friends!

Lately, Scotland has been stellar. The sun is finally out, and I can actually take photos without my hands freezing off. Success! Plus, I only have 1000 more words to write before all of my papers are done. During a study break, I walked around the Old Course and tried to take advantage of the sunlight. With great trial and error, I managed to set up some dope shots.

Even though I’ve been crazy busy, this blog always manages to be fun more than a chore. A couple of days ago, I rocked this outfit and decided to wear it again [don’t worry mom — it’s clean]. The teeshirt and trousers pair quite well, and the vest prevents stripe overload. Love. Also, there’s something about harem trousers and high tops that kills me. Call me Bieber. It’s cool.

Also repping some Swedish finds, particularly this gilet. I’m pretty sure its mens, but since when did I ever care about looking like a boy? … LOL…

Comment below on your favourite way to wear stripes on stripes — or, if you’re an outfit repeater. Like me. #Shameless.

Hello friends!

Within the last couple of days, Scotland has suddenly become warm. Yes. Really. I’ve been hiking a lot, enjoying the vitamin D before the reality of impending finals sinks in. Today, I actually bought gelato (wasabi — its better than its sounds), and the line was down the street. Coinciding with the sunshine and good vibes, I decided to rock out to Flamingosis and dress like a girly girl ’cause I’m happy. Life. Is. Good.

To keep comfy, I opted for my new Acne trainers. WARNING to those who buy them: blisters will happen. You will break them in — promise. For the beginning of the wearing process however, I wore cute socks. The habit has stuck.

On a different note, I just returned from an ice hockey game. Its making me miss home terribly (and our university team is pretty bad tbh haha).

Tell me in the comments: what’s your favourite type of gelato? Do my sunglasses resemble Stitch eyes from Lilo & Stitch? [**hopes they do**].

I hope you guys enjoyed today’s post! I think Friday posts won’t be happening until the holidays, in which I will post 3x per week instead of once. I am stoked.

Sweden Pt. 2

Hello friends!

As I write this post, I am no longer in Sweden. From the abundance of attractive men (go to any Joe and the Juice in Stockholm and you’ll understand), to the AMAZING shopping and food, I honestly didn’t want to leave. Although I spent most of the trip eating and checking out museums, I obviously made time for some Swedish shopping. First stop? Acne Studios. Naturally, I couldn’t resist these trainers. At first I thought they were quite strange, but they’re almost an art piece unto themselves. I also did some damage at Wesc, Galagowear, and Cos — I’m hooked.

Although I’m not exactly a Swedish minimalist, I love their enthusiasm for street wear and geometry (which is rather lacking in this preppy Scottish place). Since I bought  more than the jacket, shoes and tee, keep an eye out for more Swedish things in future posts.

Comment Below: What are your favourite Swedish brands? Any recommendations?

Sweden Pt. 1

Hello friends!

Thanks for the patience — I haven’t been on my “A Game” thanks to a sand dune induced case of whiplash (think concussion symptoms without the concussion. And feeling like you sprained your ankle, but in your neck). If anything, this experience has made me grateful for my health, youth, and all the work my body does 24/7 that I don’t even think about.

Now that I feel much better, I packed my bags and flew to Sweden. First stop? the MoMa of course. I’m currently taking modern art in art history, and my aim is to appreciate it more. Based on my fascination with the gigantic spider, I think my visit worked. (The museum is wonderful!!!!).

For this outfit, I decided that I was going to freeze for fun. Its my Canadian blood. I layered a teeshirt over my DVF dress and I am completely obsessed. As if this dress wasn’t amazing & versatile enough on its own. With the pop of red, I feel like a lady (thanks MAC Lady Danger for matching my Nikes).

I hope you guys enjoyed this post! Comment below if you’ve ever been to Sweden, or have MoMa recommendations. I’m on the hunt for more :).
